CISAC supports Polish artists in the fight for #royaltiesfrominternet

The General Assembly of CISAC, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, took place on 29 May in Seoul. The confederation's members passed a resolution on internet royalties in Poland

Highlighting the importance of the legal right to appropriate remuneration for filmmakers for online exploitation, representatives of organisations from 120 countries called on the Polish authorities to amend Article 70 (2) of the Copyright and Related Rights Act.

The resolution emphasises that:

  • although Article 70 (2) is one of the most important mechanisms ensuring that authors receive fair remuneration, it is not fully adapted to reality – specifically to the rapidly developing VOD sector.
  • In order to prevent the further deterioration of the situation of authors, an adequate, proportional, untransferable right to remuneration, managed by the authors' rights organisation, should be introduced, which would also be the most appropriate implementation of the DSM Directive.

The Assembly was attended by SFP-ZAPA representatives: Deputy Director Sylwia Biaduń and Cezary Piekarczyk, Head of the Distribution and Author Services Department.

This year's CISAC Assembly was also marked by AI. The impact of generative artificial intelligence on the situation of creators from various industries was the leitmotif in the speeches of CISAC President Björn Ulveaus (ABBA) and Director General Gadi Oron, as well as the topic of several panels, including one devoted to legislation in this area, in Europe and beyond, in which ZAPA representative Sylwia Biaduń took part.

CISAC members from Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Japan, Poland and the United Kingdom discussed AI regulations in individual countries, as well as possible mechanisms for licensing, remuneration and copyright protection.

Importantly, not only Polish but also Korean filmmakers are fighting for the right to remuneration. The CISAC community, as in our case, stands in solidarity with Korean creators who, although they win awards at international festivals and break records on Netflix, have not received any remuneration from the platforms or other users so far.
