Today marks the first anniversary of the Royalty Crisis Staff - a memorable event that demonstrated the strength and determination of the Polish film community. On February 21, 2024, a groundbreaking event for the fight for fair royalties took place at the Kino Kultura cinema in Warsaw, initiated by the SFP Youth Club with the support of SFP-ZAPA and creative organizations, which was a response to the exclusion of streaming royalties in the amendment to the Copyright Act.
Initially planned as a consultation meeting, it turned into a spontaneous protest that received widespread attention throughout the film community. Thanks to the unity of the filmmakers and almost 1,500 signatures on a letter to the Ministry of Culture, the topic of online royalties returned to the public debate.
After six months of intensive activity by the Filmmakers' Coalition, new regulations were finally adopted by the Sejm, the Senate and the President of the Republic of Poland, and on September 20, 2024, VOD royalties became a reality.
The anniversary of the establishment of the Coalition of Filmmakers is an opportunity to thank everyone who supported the fight for fair laws for creators. It is proof that the unity of the film community has real power!
